HISTORIC INTERIOR PHOTOGRAPHY

There are 1500 independent historic houses in the UK which receive 26 million visits per year generating £1 billion for the UK economy two thirds of which is spent in the immediate vicinity.

In addition to these are the 300 properties owned by the National Trust and a further 400 in the care of English Heritage.

The same is true across Europe and the wider world. There are, for instance, over 44,000 listed monuments in France. There are over 80,000 National Places of Historic Interest in the United States.

I have often photographed the interiors of these historic buildings.

Some are great country houses, some of the finest architecture on the planet which I covered in my 2012 book ‘World Architecture, The Masterworks’.

Others are more modest. But all of them are listed buildings that form the backbone of the planet’s cultural heritage.

Some are places that are already famous and familiar and the information the interior photographer presents must be carefully curated.

Others I discover are completely unknown and surprising. Either way its vital that my atmospheric photography captures the mood, the ambience and even the smell of a unique historic interior.
